INTRODUCING YOUR HEALTH & SAFETY NERDS

Dawn McKinlay
Account Manager
What health and safety moment are you most proud of?
I was at a clients location, providing a mini audit, and noticed a potential machine guarding hazard that they had no idea about. A staff member would try to bypass the guard, and we walked by just in time. We shut down the machine, I sent in our consultant, they created a policy and program. No one was injured, and they now have a solid program in place.
What do you like to do outside of work?
Traveling - I enjoy the sun, culture and food. I also love to hang out by the pool with my family and friends (especially my grandson and pup Bronx!)
If you could have dinner with anyone who would it be?
My Paternal Grandmother. I have been told on numerous occasions I take after her, which makes me proud, as she was the smartest, classiest woman I have ever met!
Why are you a health and safety nerd?
I am passionate about creating safe environments, preventing risks and ensuring people are protected from harm. I am deeply invested in finding fulfillment in understanding how client's systems work and how they can be optimized for safety.

Why are you a health and safety nerd?
Even though I am a newcomer to this industry, I have found myself diving into real life situations and applications with great pleasure. If you pay close attention, you will run into areas of H&S improvement on a daily basis, whether you are on the road, at home, or shopping around the block. Sometimes I find myself pointing at something and internally thinking, “hey, that doesn’t look too safe”.
What H&S experience do you have?
I am grateful to be a part of a team with a plethora of knowledge and experience. They make it easy for me to dive into the vast and relatable topics. I’m constantly learning, and taking H&S courses on my downtime, and outside of work. In the initial months on the job I’ve acquired my first Certificate from Fanshawe Corporate Training Solutions on Electrical & Electronic Fundamentals, which included aspects of H&S.

Jeff Thorne
Director of Training & Consulting
What safety moment am I most proud of?
There was a client that was going through a significant audit, they didn't have a lot in place and with the things they did have there wasn't much evidence of its implementation. I laid out a 12 month roadmap with their management team that included the creation of hazard and risk assessments and the creation and implementation of many policies and procedures. I assisted and provided guidance when and where necessary but the client and their team did a lot of the legwork on their own. They passed the audit with flying colours and improved the health, safety, and well-being of their employees. I was proud to see a client that was dedicated to improving their safety system and allocated the time, effort, and resources to doing so.
What do you do outside of work?
Anytime the grass is green I golf, anytime the white stuff is on the ground I ski. I love to travel and spend time with my family.
If I could have dinner with anyone who would it be?
I love food, having a pint and some wonderfully obscure dish with Anthony Bourdain would have been amazing.
Why am I a health and safety nerd?
I believe that individuals truly invested in this career can make a difference. The work is fulfilling and the results can be very rewarding personally and professionally.
What health and safety experience do I have?
I have been in the industry for close to thirty years with the majority of my initial focus on quality training design and delivery. I obtained various training and design certifications, ultimately becoming a certified training and design professional and working on the Education Committee of the CSSE. I became very fascinated with risk and risk tolerance and transitioned my career focus to consulting obtaining lead auditor and risk management certifications. I have also held various management and Director level positions within health and safety.
