Each June, Canada recognizes National Safety Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of workplace safety across all industries—from offices and construction sites to warehouses and manufacturing facilities. While safety should always be a year-round focus, this month gives us the opportunity to reflect, improve, and reinforce the safety practices that keep workers healthy and workplaces running smoothly.
Why National Safety Month Matters
In Canada, nearly 1,000 workplace fatalities and hundreds of thousands of injuries occur annually. Many of these incidents are preventable with the right training, awareness, and commitment. National Safety Month is a call to action for employers and employees alike to take proactive steps in improving occupational health and safety (OHS) practices.
Top General Safety Practices to Promote This June
1. Know the Safety ProceduresAll employees should be familiar with emergency procedures, reporting systems, and the safety protocols specific to their workplace. Clear communication and regular reviews of policies are critical.
2. Be Aware of Your SurroundingsSituational awareness reduces the risk of slips, trips, falls, and equipment-related accidents. Workers should always take note of hazards, signage, and the activities happening around them.
3. Maintain Cleanliness and OrderA clean workspace is a safe workspace. Proper housekeeping helps prevent accidents and allows for safer movement of people and equipment.
4. Stay Alert at All TimesFatigue, distractions, and complacency are among the most dangerous hazards in the workplace. Regular breaks, proper shift scheduling, and mental wellness support can all improve alertness and reduce risk.
5. Speak Up About Unsafe ConditionsCreating a culture of open communication means encouraging everyone to report unsafe conditions without fear of reprisal. Prompt reporting can prevent serious injuries.
