MLITSD Inspection Priorities (Blitz) for 2026–2027

3 min read

Each year, the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (MLITSD) establishes inspection priorities (blitzes) that target specific workplace hazards, industries, and health and safety issues across Ontario. These priorities guide proactive workplace inspections and are communicated in advance to help employers understand the areas that may receive increased regulatory attention.

What this means for your workplace

If your organization operates within one of the identified sectors, Ministry inspectors may place additional emphasis on the priority hazards and compliance initiatives during an inspection. While these focus areas help direct inspection activities, employers are still required to maintain compliance with all applicable provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and its regulations, regardless of industry or inspection priority.

What the MLITSD Blitz Program Focuses On

MLITSD inspection blitzes are proactive enforcement initiatives designed to improve workplace health and safety by focusing on high risk hazards, industries, and work activities. During these inspections,

Ministry inspectors evaluate not only the physical conditions of the workplace but also the effectiveness of an organization's health and safety management system.

Inspectors may:

∙Review health and safety documentation, policies, and training records

∙Observe work practices and employee behaviours

∙Interview workers, supervisors, and management

∙Assess how workplace hazards are identified, communicated, and controlled

∙Verify compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and applicable regulations

The Ministry publishes its annual inspection initiatives to help employers understand which industries and hazards will receive increased regulatory attention and to encourage proactive compliance.

How MSW Safety Can Help

Preparing for an MLITSD inspection is most effective when it begins well before an inspector arrives. A proactive approach allows organizations to identify compliance gaps, strengthen health and safety programs, and address deficiencies before they become orders or penalties. MSW Safety partners with employers across Ontario to help them confidently prepare for Ministry inspections by providing practical, specific solutions. Our consultants work alongside your team to evaluate your current programs, identify areas requiring improvement, and develop realistic action plans that support ongoing compliance.

Our inspection readiness services include:

∙Comprehensive workplace compliance audits

∙Policy and procedure development

∙WHMIS program reviews and employee training

∙Noise exposure assessments and control program development

∙Supervisor and worker training

∙Mock MLITSD inspections

Be Ready Before the Inspector Arrives

An MLITSD inspection should never be the first time your workplace's health and safety systems are thoroughly reviewed. By preparing in advance, organizations can reduce regulatory risk, improve worker safety, and demonstrate due diligence.

Whether you require a complete compliance audit or assistance addressing specific inspection focus areas,

MSW Safety can help your organization prepare with confidence. Our experienced consultants provide practical guidance, hands-on support,  and ongoing assistance to help you build a safer workplace and maintain compliance with Ontario's occupational health and safety legislation.
